New music from Waclaw Zimpel: 'Train Spotter' out today
We're very proud to announce news of Waclaw Zimpel's new album, Train Spotter, due for release 31 March via state51. The album is available as a standard edition 12” vinyl and as an exclusive limited edition of 51 copies, completed and hand finished in the state51 Atelier. Available to pre-order now
In the seven years since the release of his debut solo album, ‘Lines’, Waclaw Zimpel has developed from his idiosyncratic approach to jazz to growing into a potent and inventive force in the field of electronic music.
‘Train Spotter’ was created for a specific brief from The City of Warsaw: to capture the Sound of the City of Warsaw. Like boarding a midnight train at Warszawa Centralna to an unknown destination, Waclaw Zimpel’s single ‘Train Spotter’ captures the rhythms of the trail tracks and the sense of adventure of wondering where this excursion will end. The mystery of the destination adds to the excitement that’s elicited. This track is a version of composition that Zimpel originally composed for the contemporary dance performance "Motions of Revolution" co-created with choreographer and dancer Maria Zimpel and playwright Sara Kaluzna.
Speaking about the track and the collaboration with
Maria and Sara, Zimpel says the performance was a feminist response
to the violated rights of women in Poland. In the past two years, numerous
demonstrations against violations of human rights by the government have swept
through Poland - I am referring here primarily to the rights of the LGBTQ+
community and women's rights. They were very powerful experiences that even
a raging pandemic could not stop. This kind of arousal, sense of community and
specific experience of the city during the demonstrations has stayed with me and
Train Spotter has come out of these experience

MEMORIALS announce debut double album 'Music For Film' and release debut single
MEMORIALS is the new band
of Verity Susman (Electrelane’s frontwoman)
and Matthew Simms (Wire, Better
Corners, It Hugs
Back, UUUU). Their first release
– a double album titled ‘Music For
Film: Tramps! & Women Against The Bomb’ – is
scheduled for May 12th
2023 via The state51 Conspiracy. It was written,
performed, recorded and produced by the duo, veering from melodic songwriting to
psychedelic noise, free jazz freakouts, tape loops and drones, and then back
again.
The two albums
‘Tramps!’
and ‘Women Against The
Bomb’ were originally conceived as film soundtracks,
and while they still adhere to that original concept, the band’s desire to
play live and make music outside of soundtracks mean both albums can be viewed
independently from the films with which they are associated. The double
album is available on 12" vinyl: pre-order
now
The announcement is
accompanied by new single, 'It's
In Our Hands'. MEMORIALS offer the following
on the upbeat and propulsive
single : "It’s In Our Hands is written
from the perspective of activists at Greenham Common women’s peace camp in
England in the 1980s. We wrote the song for the film Women Against The Bomb,
which is about the peace camp and the inspiring women who made it happen.
It’s a pop-folk song that has echoes of the alternative music of that era
and it follows the film director’s request for songs that sound like they
could have been sung at the peace camp, or listened to on their Walkmans. It was
written, recorded, produced and mixed by us in a day – it was the last
track we wrote for the
film."
