UKAEA Announces New
Single ‘Habibi’
ft. Dali de Saint
Paul
UKAEA is the singular musical vision of Dan Jones, who is part of a thriving DIY scene centred around New River Studios, in Harringay, London. UKAEA is in part a response to the emotional and intellectual stresses of geopolitics in 2023, mixing various strains of hardcore electronic dance music, with deep, often long-running collaborations with musicians from across the world, complimented by his studies of musical forms including gamelan.
Habibi is UKAEA’s incredible new single featuring one of Europe’s most important young experimental musicians, Dali de Saint Paul, who is currently based in Bristol.
Dan says: “I’ve been a fan of
Dali’s for years. I sent her a percussion loop I made with [Chris
Cunningham collaborator] Tom Blackburn and a drone and she came back to me with
this incredible vocal performance, that made the hairs on the back of my neck
stand on end. So I smashed the track apart and then reassembled it around what
she had created.”

Eight decades in and Charles Hayward (This Heat, Camberwell Now) isn’t slowing down, he’s picking up the pace. Following on from a sensational string of gigs and festival performances, his latest endeavour - Abstract Concrete - is now primed to release this astounding self-titled debut via The state51 Conspiracy. The band features the luminous cast of Agathe Max (Mésange, UKAEA) on viola, Otto Willberg (Yes Indeed, Historically Fucked) on bass, Roberto Sassi (Snorkel, Cardosanto) on guitar, Yoni Silver (Hyperion Ensemble, Steve Noble) on keyboards and, of course, Charles himself on drums and vocals. With this undeniable experimental pedigree, it’ll likely come as one hell of a surprise that this group are now responsible for one of the most persuasive and hook-laden avant pop albums of the year.
Rough Trade East will be hosting the band for a live in-store performance and signing on Thursday 23rd November to celebrate the release of the album on Friday 17th November 2003.

Matt Loveridge (a founding member of BEAK> with Geoff Barrow of Portishead) has all the hallmarks of one of tomorrow’s key cult artists. His latest album (SAINT, recorded as MXLX) is his 63rd in two decades… but his best by some margin. In some senses he is an outsider artist, but this idea doesn’t give you the full picture of just how good a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter he is.
SAINT sees him reconnect with one of his first musical loves: heavy metal: “My cousin used to babysit me when I was six. He played me a lot of Metallica and it blew my head open; I had no idea music could do that.” He went through a teenage phase of loving Slipknot and Napalm Death and has, in more recent years, tried to capture some of this overwhelming power, in a completely unique form of music which owes just as much to experimental electronic music, English and Indian folk, sea shanties, post rock, noise and techno.
SAINT is released
on Friday 10th November.
